Top 5 Boys Performances from Drake Relays

1. Gable Sieperda - Boys 3200

At last year's Drake Relays, Sieperda went out hard taking the lead early, but ending up finishing 4th in a time of 9:17. For his senior year, Sieperda dropped the field finishing in a time of 9:11, winning by over 10 seconds, which is one of the largest margins in recent years. That performance currently ranks him 75th in the country for the event.

2. Dawson Ellingson - Discus

The senior from Hudson High School claimed his first Drake Relays title, and threw a nearly 6 foot PR. Beyond that, this throw was over 20 feet farther than his best throw from last year. Beyond that, he beat KP-WC powerhouse Nick Phelps whose current season best of 196-2.5 ranks him 3rd in the United States. Ellingson's Drake Relays throw puts him 23rd in the nation for the discus.

3. Riley Moss- 110m Hurdles

The Ankeny Centennial senior is currently ranked 6th in the United States in the event with a PR of 13.91. At the Drake Relays, Moss won by a margin of 0.4 with an overall time of 14.04. Even that time would rank him in the top 20 for all high school boys in the US.

4. Nick Phelps - Shot Put

Though Nick Phelps has consistently been ranked as one of the top throwers in the nation, he had yet to earn a Drake Relays flag. With countless State titles, the Drake Relays title was the cherry on top for the KP-WC senior. He is currently ranked 6th in the nation with a throw of 66-0.25, and his Drake Relays throw of 65-3.5 would rank 8th overall.

5. Mike Jasa - 4x800 and SHR

Mike Jasa set history as the first athlete to win in both the 4x800 and the Shuttle Hurdle Relay. The feat is especially impressive when you consider the versatility the two events require - the quick anaerobic speed of hurdles, and the strong endurance required for the 800. He split a 1:56.1 in the 800, leading his Prairie team with the fastest time between the four relay members. He also clocked the fastest individual split for his SHR team. Beyond that, Jasa also split a 54.37 in the 400 Hurdles for an 8th place finish.

Overall, the Drake Relays presented perfect weather every day for excellent performances, which showed. Check out more post-race interviews HERE and tons of photos HERE!
