Salute to Seniors 7: T. Shelby, K. Lewis, & More

Aisha Southern (Hazelwood Central)

Q: What was your most memorable race/moment?

A: My junior year I was the alternate on the 4x2 at state and I ended up running. It was the only event I had ever made it to state in. In the prelims, we set the state record of 1:37.85 and came back for the win in the final, leading by almost 40m.

Q: Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

A: Myself. I mentally defeated myself more than you can imagine.

Q: What was your greatest accomplishment?

A: Going from being scared to run with the fast girls to becoming the fast girl.

Q: If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

A: I wouldn't worry about having specific performances at specific times, I would just run and have fun with it.

Q: What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

A: The ever-changing coaching staff at central. As a team we faced an extreme amount of adversity trying to deal with that.

Q: What will you miss the most?

A: My teammates. Especially from my first few years, we were a family.

Q: What advice would you give to younger athletes?

A: No matter where you are at now, there is no limit to how talented you can be. The key is hard work and knowing how bad you want it.

Q: What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

A: My AAU coaches always help guide me to my next step in life, which is college. They have a huge impact on me because they are the ones that got me to this point. Go Ultimate Speed Academy!

Q: What are your college plans?

A: I will be attending the University of Memphis.

Q: Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

A: Coach Norwood for taking in a girl who ran 14.1 in the 100 because he saw potential in me. Also, Coach Torbert, the hurdles master, for going above and beyond for me everyday and always believing in me. My friends, family, and teammates for always cheering me on and lifting me up. Lastly, Hasani Barr, for being the GOAT and inspiring me to be great.

Q: Is there anything else you'd like to add?

A: Younger athletes, be sure to stay on top of your grades! If you plan to run in college, they will help, BIG TIME!

Q:: What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

A: Shuttle hurdle relay my freshman year, where my teammate went first and she fell twice, and then I went and fell and we looked crazy.
