Salute to Seniors: A. Barber, M. Reese, & J. O'Donnell

Name: Madison Reese

School: Ozark High School

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable moment was hands down when I broke the school record and got 3rd at State this year. It was my last high school meet so that was pretty cool! I also got to help our team to a 3rd place overall finish which was something we've never done as a program.

What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

Probably when Liv Lyon cussed on the runway at our Ozark Meet this year and almost got disqualified so the coaches were going to make her run the 4x400 and she was freaking out.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Nixa's Drue Lawerence definitely pushes me to be a better thrower and is always there to support me when I succeed so I'd have to say her.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was when I hit 131 at the SBU meet and later 134 at State. My goal coming into the season was to break 130 so doing that was pretty cool.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

Absolutely nothing. I loved every second of it and my teammates weren't only my friends but my second family too.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Sophomore year I tore my ACL so coming back from that was pretty hard but it made me a better competitor and person.

What will you miss the most?

I'll miss all the little moments with my teammates. The bus rides, hotel adventures, "what are the odds" games, and many more. We made some memories I'll never forget.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Cherish the little moments and always work hard. You won't believe it when you're younger but high school goes by really fast. It feels like I just started freshman year yesterday but here I am moving onto college in August. So don't take the practices or bus rides for granted, cherish those moments because they won't last forever.

What kind of an impact has your coach had on you and your team?

They have helped me become a better athlete and have helped me learn how to do and plan workouts on my own which will come in handy in the future.

What are your college plans?

I will be attending Pittsburg State University this fall to major in Biology with and emphasis in Pre-Medicine and throw javelin for their track team.

Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

I'd like to first thank my parents for driving me all over the Midwest for softball or basketball or track and always supporting me in whatever it is to do. I'd also like to thank my brother for sitting through thousands of games the past 18 years. Thanks to my grandparents for making it to every sporting event they could even if it was hours away. Finally thanks to my teammates and coaches for supporting me and helping me become a better athlete.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

High school track was arguably my favorite part of high school. These girls will be lifelong friends and it was a honor to have been their teammates. The past two seasons have been special and accomplishing so much with them has been pretty awesome. I'll miss them next year.
