Salute to Seniors: Michael Giles

Michael Giles (Hermann)
When did you first start running, and do you recall any of your childhood races?
7th Grade. Running the 4x8 at our home meet

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
When we got 2nd in the 4x800 at the district meet my sophomore year

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
When I wasn't old enough to drive myself to the track for winter training.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
We had to cut out a part of our warm up to maintain social distancing. I also got quarantined during cross country this past season and had to adjust my workouts so I could do them at home.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
Westminster college because their coach reached out to me and I liked the potential the team had.

Let's discuss the college searching process. What was that like, and what schools did you look at?
I toured 3 other schools. Lindenwood, UCM, and UMSl. My priorities were athletics, price and academics.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
Pole vault. I've never done a field event and it looks like a lot of fun.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
Playing music. I played the trombone and baritone in high school.

Who is your role model, and why?
My head track coach, Coach Morris because of how well he stays true to his principles.

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of things on your list!
Go to the beach again, travel outside of the U.S., go scuba diving,

What is the best advice you have received?
There are no special workouts. All it takes is the discipline and desire to do whatever it takes to be the best athlete you can be.

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?
For XC we would have pasta parties the night before a race. One of the families would host the team and serve pasta. It was a lot of fun bonding with the team and families!

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?
If my school had a. Men's volleyball team that's what I'd do because it was a lot of fun playing it in gym class or at the park.

Any Final Shout outs?
Don't let set backs or a bad workout ruin your mentality. Training plans are not fragile. Just stay positive and focused. All else will fall into place.
