The Mizzou High School Distance & Sprint Elite returns to Columbia, Missouri, on Friday, February 6, 2026, marking the second edition of a meet that is quickly carving out a place on the indoor calendar for high-level high school competition. After a strong inaugural year, meet organizers have expanded the schedule with additional events, further sharpening the meet's identity as a destination for athletes looking to test themselves in a championship-style environment early in the season. With a growing reputation and a centrally located venue, the meet is expected to draw top talent not only from Missouri, but also from Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, and other surrounding states willing to travel for quality competition.
The event is hosted inside the historic Hearnes Center Fieldhouse, one of the most storied indoor track facilities in the Midwest. First opened in 1972, the Hearnes Center has been a fixture in collegiate and high school track for more than four decades. Its first major meet came on January 27, 1973, when Missouri hosted a triangular meet against Arkansas and Wichita State in front of nearly 1,000 spectators. Over the years, the facility has played host to the Big Eight Indoor Track & Field Championships and countless collegiate and prep meets, making it a familiar stage for high-caliber racing. Today, the Hearnes Center features a recently renovated 200-meter Mondo track, complete with a 21-meter radius and 12-degree banking, offering athletes a fast, forgiving surface that rewards aggressive racing in both the sprints and distance events.
As athletes from across the region prepare to converge on Columbia, the Mizzou HS Distance & Sprint Elite stands as a reminder that strong indoor opportunities aren't limited to traditional hotbeds. Between a historic facility, a fast track, and a growing commitment to elite-level competition, Friday night at the Hearnes Center promises to deliver a compelling mix of speed, strength, and early-season statements-exactly what an indoor showcase should be.
