The first weekend of the season featured only a handful of meets, but there were several important performances beyond the winning individuals and teams. Here are five nuggets that you may have missed now that the dust has settled on week number 1.

1. Central (Springfield) May Be Emerging As a Class 4 Contender
Assuming Central (Springfield), who was on the Class 4/Class 5 border last fall, stays in Class 4 this year, results from their season opener at the 417Running Kickoff at Nixa's Inman Intermediate School course show that they could be emerging as a dark horse Class 4 contender for a state trophy in 2026.
The Bulldogs held out their top 5 returners, including returning all-stater Ronald Timm, and still finished second overall with a 17:41 1-5 average. Newcomer Daniel Munoz, a junior, led the way with a 16:40.70 debut for second overall and junior Owen Underwood finished fifth with an 85-second personal best of 17:25.50. Many of the team's returners had big days with six boys running a 40-second or better personal best.
We will most likely see at the SWCCCA Richard Clark Invitational this weekend what a full Central (Springfield) contingent looks like and it could be dangerous for the rest of the Class 4 field.
2. Smithville's Tristan Adams Has Arrived
Super-Frosh Tristan Adams is here and appears ready to make his mark on the Class 4 landscape himself.
As an eighth grader, Adams ran a 4:39.17 full mile, 10:06.05 full 2 miles, and 6:44.13 2K Steeplechase, making him one of the top freshman boys to watch heading into the season. At his home invitational Saturday morning, Adams ran a 16:44.00 debut and placed second overall to Park Hill South's Elias Berry, a sophomore who ran a 68-second personal best 16:38.55 in his own right.
Smithville has two meets on the schedule this week: Grain Valley's Twilight Glow Tuesday night and the always competitive Tim Nixon Invitational on Saturday morning.
3. Liberty Wentzville's Girls' Team Has A Scary 1-2-3 Punch
Of course we know about Bella Navarro-Sanchez, one of the nominees for performer of the week, and we have mentioned Emma Glavin in the past as an incoming freshman to watch, but a third superstar Eagle has emerged from the Como Kick-off in sophomore Macailyn Townsend.
Navarro-Sanchez won the meet with her 10:27.78 meet record. Glavin crossed second in 11:13.61, 47 seconds faster than the 3K mark she posted as an 8th grader. Townsend, a basketball player primarily, was the third athlete across the line with an 11:16.33 mark. Last year, she ran 20:10.50 and was an individual state qualifier with her 30th place finish at the District 3 meet. This 3K mark shows that there may be even more in the tank for the sophomore and Liberty Wentzville may be a dangerous team themselves moving forward in 2026.
4. Nixa's Girls Have a 1-2 Punch of Their Own
Last season, Nixa's Emma Hurst was second on her team and top non-senior with her 19:31.76 personal best. Hurst was pushed to #2 again this year by super-frosh Chaseley Guyear, featured in our performer of the week poll, but still ran a strong personal best for the runner-up finish on her home course at the 417Running Kickoff.
This spring, Hurst ran personal bests of 5:18.81 and 11:38.55, 30 seconds and 77 seconds better, respectively, than her marks from 2025. She appears to be on track for a major breakout in 2026 and helped lead Nixa to the top of the team ranks in the entire state this weekend.
5. Lincoln College Prep Boys are For Real
We profiled Lincoln College Prep's boys in the Class 4 teams deep dive last week and it appears that they will be just as dangerous as we had surmised.
On Saturday, the Tigers took to the course at Smithville's Julia Bargman Invitational and came out of it with a 17:33.03 1-5 average with a top 7 which included four sophomores at the top and freshmen at #5 and #7. Junior Logan Kane was their #6 on the day, but is their top returner with his 16:19.40 personal best. This is a team to certainly keep an eye on in 2026, but could be even stronger in 2027 and beyond.
