Rockhurst junior Jack McGovern continued his assault on Missouri history at the Gans Creek Classic Elite Twilight Friday night, putting on an absolute cross country running clinic en route to a new Missouri State record and US No. 3 mark of 14:25.80.
The number is already incredible on its own, but the route McGovern took to the mark is just as impressive. What seemed to be a calculated strategy was executed to perfection as he took over the race completely around the 3500 meter mark and began to open up his gap from there. That second place finisher Kuma Gutema was within 1 second at the 3K mark and finished 24 seconds back of McGovern tells a much larger story of domination in the second half of the race. Gutema, one of Iowa's finest in 2026, finished in a 14:48.20 season best, but was stride for stride with Rockhurst's superstar junior at the 2 mile mark. But it was a few meters later that McGovern took off.
Sprinting around the backside of the course, McGovern's 2:51.0 fourth kilometer broke open the race and was his second-fastest split of the night after his 2:50.8 opener. Though the fourth split was only 4 seconds faster than Gutema's 2:55 split, the final result would tell a story of domination in the final kilometer, as well.

Liberty North's Nathaniel Haberlach took the race out hard and immediately charged to the lead. After a 14:40.66 mark at the Sugar Creek Showdown last weekend, the senior was surely riding some momentum into a 2:49.0 first kilometer and 2:52.2 second kilometer. McGovern and Gutema sat close behind him as they rounded the corner and headed back down the opening straightaway, catching and passing Haberlach at the 2200 mark. Haberlach would hang tough, still only two seconds back of the top two runners, but would end up losing the pack. He would still cross in his second-best career time - 14:54.20 - and still sits second among all Missourians so far this season.
Only those three boys would cross under 15:00 in what had been billed as a race which could have seen as many as ten boys break the 15:00 mark. Pre-race favorite Sean Burns was a surprising DNS and it seemed that an early-race drizzle may have dampened the initial adrenaline rush of a fast first kilometer. Regardless, two others crossed under 15:10 - Jack Crossland, Johnston (IA) and Lucas Brady, Fayetteville (AR) - and a total of 54 boys navigated the course under 16:00, 6 more than in 2025.

Bridgeland (TX) won the hotly-contested team title by a razor-thin margin over Bentonville (AR). For the second straight year, Bentonville will leave Columbia with a close second place finish, but to finish second with a 15:33.90 1-5 average while missing their 14:36 frontman is nothing short of impressive. They had seven boys under 16:00 in the elite varsity race and an eighth under the mark in the JV race. On the day, Bentonville had three full teams of boys (22) under 17:00 led by Camden McClellan in 15:18.50.
But Bridgeland earned the spotlight on Friday night, scoring 118 points and pushing into the top spot over the final kilometer. A 22-place improvement from the 4K to finish line from their top three runners seemed to make the difference. The Bears were led by Dean Rosales who finished 14th in 15:23.60. He was closely followed by Patricio Navarro in 16th (15:25.80) and Ilyes Benguedda in 17th (15:26.00). Bridgeland had 8 boys under 16:05 in this race, a 15:34.80 1-5 average, and a tiny 26.4 second 1-5 spread.
Rockhurst ended up a not-too-distant third, taking back the lead in the state rankings as a result. Jack Morrison was 15th in 15:24.40 and sophomore Charles Sullivan crossed 21st in 15:29.80.
