(Kansas, City, Mo.) -  The UMKC track and field program inked its fourth signee for the 2012-13 season with distance runner Kolton Sheldon out of Lee's Summit North High School (Mo.) committing to the Kangaroos.

"I'm really looking forward to competing with a new group of guys," said Sheldon.  "I have been competing against the same guys for four years now and I want a change of scenery."

Notable top finishes for his career includes a third (2009), fifth (2010), and second (2011) place finish at the Missouri Class 4 Cross Country State Championships.  He also holds a personal best time of 15:45 in the 5,000 meters.

"We are very excited to have Kolton join us this fall," said UMKC distance coach James Butler.   "He has had one of the most decorated cross country careers in Missouri history and he will make an immediate impact on our team."

Sheldon added he's extremely excited to get started with Butler as he's produced some fantastic runners and will continue to do the same at UMKC.

"Kolton has the ability and desire to be one of the best distance runners in the country and I fully expect great things from him as he moves to the next step in his running career here at UMKC," added Butler.

Sheldon also expressed he has a lot to live up to coming from high school and competing at the college level.

"I would really like to see myself become a sub-four miler along with being good enough so people will have to start planning on how to deal with me in races."

Leading up to his decision, Kolton chose UMKC over Mizzou.
