Kallenberger Soars Again

JEFFERSON CITY – Brittany Kallenberger already knew what it was like to soar into air reserved for a select few.

The Lee’s Summit West senior was fresh off leaping into uncharted waters with a three-inch PR to claim the high jump on Friday of the Class 4 state meet at 5 feet, 8 inches.

She decided to go even higher on Saturday.

All eyes turned to Kallenberger as the lone competitor still alive in the pole vault as the state meet neared its conclusion. She won the event when she cleared 12 feet, 6 inches, which set a new all-class record. Then she went even higher, topping 12-10 to push the record further out of reach.

“That was unimaginable; I’m still speechless on it,” Kallenberger said. “I tried not to think about it. I just said, ‘Alright, next bar, let’s go.’”

She cleared 12-10 on her first attempt and then made three runs at 13-0. She just missed, but the Central Missouri signee knows she’s got it in her.

“(Thirteen feet) is right there. I’ll get it this summer.”

The new PR in the high jump, which was within an inch of the state record, was still resonating with Kallenberger on Saturday. She said the win there carried over and helped her take down the pole vault record.

“It helped a lot … that 5-8 jump still amazes me,” Kallenberger said. “I’m going to be crying the whole way home. I came here in three events, placed in all three – state champ in two back-to-back from last year – and I got PRs in everything so I’m happy.”

Kallenberger also took fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles (14.69).
