Salute To Seniors: Eric Sivill - Parkway Central

What was your most memorable race?

My most memorable race would have to be the 2011 State XC Championships.  It was just such a fun and great race to be in.  I choked the year before, and this was only my second year making it to state.  So when I came across the first mile 21st, I knew it wasn't going to be easy.  In the end I managed to beat my goal and get 15th overall.  Being on the podium for the first time in Missouri was one of the happiest times of my life

Who was your biggest competition?

The throwers, they were always the biggest.  But for real, I would say everyone I've raced.  Hi everyone, good race.

Out of all of your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?

My 1600 State Finish.  It was my first year at State Track for an individual event, and being able to take 5th was huge for me.  I honestly feel like nothing I had ever done compared to that moment when I crossed the line.  I had the biggest, goofiest smile as I crossed, and one of the official ladies told me, "They need a picture of that".

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would run track my freshman year.  Freshman year I decided to play lacrosse for the high school because I did in eighth grade.  Little did I know, I was terrible.  So that took out my running motivation for the summer, leaving me with a poor sophomore season.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Freshman year in XC, I sustained a bad spike injury around the second mile of the Warrior Invitational.  It was pretty bad, and ended up being a season ender.  It managed to heal up enough for me to run one more race at the end of the year, but not too well.  The problem was that the scar tissue from the spike left nerve damage.  So I had to get surgery, and they put an implant in my ankle, and it all worked out.  Luckily there were no lasting effects besides minor numbness in my left foot.  But now you can say that Eric Sivill has an implant

What will you miss the most?

The camaraderie and fun of my team.  Honestly I would look forward to practice every day just because of how fun it was every day.  Just general shenanigans and whatnot.  Shout out to the Parkway Central Trifecta, they helped keep me sane on these long runs.

Do you have any advice for younger athletes?

Off season work and buy into the program.  I never really knew what to do, so it basically came down to doing whatever the coaches told me.  So after four years, it paid off.  And that included off season training.  There is nothing you can do that will make a bigger drop in your times than to run in the off season.  So really, listen to your coaches and run a lot.

What are your college plans?

I will be heading to the University of Alabama to study engineering.  I will be running both Track and Cross Country, and will be far away from everyone.  So if you're up for an 8 hour drive, come on down to Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to start this acceptance speech with a thanking of my coaches.  Coach Warren and Coach Bergeron for being my coaches throughout all four years, and managing to put up with me.  Coach Banta for my off season work and in season speeches, and Coach Levine for summer track.  My teammates were another huge part in my success.  I really couldn't have done it without them.  And all my friends around Missouri.  Running has allowed me to meet tons of people from different schools, so chances are if you've seen me, I had a big goofy smile on my face.  And if I haven't met you, come say hi.
