Where are they now? - Emily Sisson - Parkway Central - 2010

Where did you continue your running career after high school?

I am entering my junior year running at Providence College.

What was the biggest adjustment you had to make to compete at the college level?

The biggest challenge for me was learning how to adjust to a different type of racing. The NCAA is very strong, and there are so many talented athletes. Every race feels like a big competition because of how deep the fields are.

Is there anything you can tell high school athletes to better prepare them for the college experience?

Adjusting to college can be slightly overwhelming at first, but it is a really exciting step to take! Don't worry if it feels hard at times, because it feels that way for everyone at some point. Enjoy all of the new experiences that you have ahead of yourself with all of your new teammates and friends.

What memories from competing in high school stand out the most?

I remember the cross country state meet very well! I still think it is one of the hardest courses I have ever run on. I think racing there made me feel tough! Footlocker is one of those races I will always remember as well. The experience there is unforgettable.

What do you miss most about running in high school?

I miss my teammates, but I still stay in touch with quite a few of them. It's nice because when we come home for breaks during the year you can always find someone who is up for a run!

What piece of coaching or advice that someone gave you has been the biggest help?

I was really worked up before a race one day, and I remember talking to my mom on the phone one night. She reminded me that I shouldn't stress so much over something that I love to do. I have started to look at running from this perspective. I am so thankful when I am healthy, and I really do look forward to running every day! It's my passion. I think of this whenever I am nervous before a race. It's important to remember why we run and not get so caught up in the hype of racing sometimes!
