College Profiles - Hannibal-Lagrange University

Our third university in our college profile series takes us a bit north of St. Louis.  Hannibal-Lagrange, an NAIA School in the American Midwest, is our next profiled instituion.

Public or Private: Hannibal-LaGrange is a four-year private Christian university fully accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. 

Size: HLGU is sized right for personal attention from faculty and staff. The student/faculty ratio is 14:1. Most classes have fewer than twenty students, providing for more interaction.

Setting: HLGU is located just 100 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri and is situated on 110 acres of scenic hills and woods on the bluffs above the Mississippi River. 

Popular Majors:HLGU is known for its Education, Nursing, Business, and Christian ministries degrees

The Program

Program Size: Our program is 40 total student-athletes. This gives us the ability to a large team setting with a small team environment, giving athletes an opportunity to compete right away and get one on one coaching. 

What type of student-athlete does your program recruit?  

Anyone who might be interested in running for both competitive and social reasons. 

What are some recent accomplishments of the program or individuals in the program?

Over the last two years – 20 NAIA National Qualifiers.  7 NAIA All-Americans, 7 NAIA Daktronics All Scholar athletes, 6 – NAIA All-Scholar teams (M&W Cross County, Indoor and outdoor track). 1 NAIA National Champion and NAIA National Record Holder – Nickola Shingles – Indoor 60 meters (7.86 broke national record of 7.89).
All-American in cross country 
o Kristen Garwood – 2012  NAIA Cross Country Nationals (23rd place)
All-Americans in NAIA Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field
o Breanna Newton – 2012 Indoor Track and Field 1000 meters (7th place)
o Philiph Tonui – 2012 Outdoor Track and Field Marathon (4th place) 
o Breanna Newton – 2013 Indoor Track and Field 1000 meters (8th place)
o Kristen Garwood – 2013 Indoor Track and Field 5000 meters (5th place)
o Nickola Shingles – 2013 Indoor Track and Field 60 meter hurdles (1st place)
o Nickola Shingles – 2013 Outdoor Track and Field 110 meter high hurdles (5th)
Kristen Garwood was 2012-2013 AMC – Cross Country, Indoor and Outdoor runner of the year as well as newcomer of the year in cross country and Indoor track. 
Holland McCoy 2013– was indoor and outdoor field athlete of the year 
Nickola Shingles 2013 – Was the newcomer of the year in indoor track 
Chris Smith – 2013- Indoor field athlete of the year in indoor track

What other information about your college and/or program would be beneficial to student-athletes and parents who are in the process of searching for a college?

The information that would be beneficial to students and parents is that we offer competitive athletic and academic scholarships that we are able to stack and give you an overall better financial package. Athletes in our program have also improved a lot both athletically and academically. Athletes in our program broke 42 school records including 20 distance records.  Academically, we have had 6 NAIA scholar teams (M&W cross Country, indoor and outdoor track) and 7 NAIA all scholar athletes in the last two years.
