Interview with Southern Boone County High School senior Landon Bartel, after his impressive performance at the 2014 MSHSAA Missouri Class 3-4 State Track and Field Championships, May 30-31 in Jefferson City. Bartel is more than just a high jump star, as he shined with a 13-inch personal-record of 23-1.75 in the long jump to take the Class 3 crown, led the 110 hurdles until hitting a hurdle halfway and setting for third in 14.68, earned a PR of 44-4.5 in the triple jump to take 5th, and capped it off with a 7-foot clearance in the high jump to tie the Class 3 record, before a couple of decent attempts at 7-3.25. Bartel totaled all 30 points for the Eagles who finished in a tie for sixth-place in the team race, just eight points back of a tie for the fourth-place trophy. The University of Nebraska signee may pick up the multi-events as a Husker, but will concentrate on the high jump this summer where he will compete at the USA Track & Field Junior Nationals in Eugene, Or. in early July, shooting for a top-two finish and spot on the U.S. team that will compete at the World Junior Championships, also in Eugene, in late July.
