Record Watch: Class 2 Record - 12.13 set in 2008. Top Seed: Aiesha Irvin-Muhammad - 11.6H/11.98 FAT
This race should be a good one with what looks like four girls with a great chance to win this race (and possibly even break the Class Record). The leading candidate is most likely St. Elizabeth’s Aiesha Irvin-Muhammad. In her senior year, and the last year for the St. Louis school, Irvin-Muhammad is looking to bring a title to St. Elizabeth’s after a second place finish in Class 3 last year. She ran an 11.6 (hand timed) early in the season, putting her as one of the fastest ladies in Missouri. After a slew of mid 12 second FAT times, Irvin-Muhammad showed she was legit with a sub 12 second FAT at sectionals. She won’t be alone in the hunt for the five year old Class Record of 12.13. Returning champ, Carly Spalding clocked in at 12.14, a new season best, to win her sectional meet. Last May Spalding won by nearly two tenths of a second. Spalding will need to be on top of her game to defend her title, not only against Irvin-Muhammad but also Tamora Fonda and Gretchen Mayes. Fonda was second behind Muhammad in Sectional 1, running 12.55. Her best of 12.21 puts her third in Class 2. Lathrop’s Gretchen Mayes is also awfully close to that record – a swift 12.26 this year but a 12.18 set previously. I think if the conditions are right we are seeing a couple girls under Precious Selmon’s 12.13.
