Preview

Last year Deko Ricketts surprised a lot of people, pulling away in the last 400 meters to win the 1600m.  As a sophomore he was fourth, running a PR of 4:25.  So far the reigning champ has only run 4:34, ranked sixth in Class 2.  I think like we saw last year, his time will drop at state like it always does.  Personally, I like Tyler Rush’s odds in this race.  Following in the footsteps of Kaleb Wilson, Rush dominated throughout the cross season which was capped off with an incredible 16:33 run at State. He holds the top mark this season for 1600 in Class 2 – 4:25 set in late April.  Rush is incredibly strong and he is surely motivated after a two second loss to Ricketts at state last year.  Continuing to move down last year’s results, Ryan Beaver, third a year ago, looks to bring a title back to a famed College Heights crew.  Beaver is among the best when he is at the top of is game evidenced by his PR of 4:28 at his conference meet.  Future Missouri Southern runner, Drew Bucker is running well when it counts with times of 4:35 and 4:32 the past two weeks.  My dark horse is Drake Smelser.  With a 9:42 3200 PR and 16:27 5K, this guy can run.  He won both his district and sectional in both the 1600 and 3200.  Lastly, Spencer Hudson – 4th a year ago.  He cannot be forgotten as he has run 4:31 before.
