Preview
Last year Lutheran St. Charles had the best time from prelims. They looked like they had it in the finals, but Trenton beat them to the line by half a second. Their time from finals was better than the winning time. The squad, all sophomores a year ago, is looking to claim their gold medals this year after a bitter loss. Sophie Angell leads the way, running 60.5 in the open 400 at sectionals. With three more girls in the top 45, they have the depth necessary for victory in the 4x400. Their 4:08 from sectionals puts them on top, beating Penney’s time set earlier in the season. Penney has the potential to be great led by one of the best athletes in Class 2, Morgan Prather. She hasn’t looked the same since a mid-season injury. If she is ready to go for state this team is lethal. Other teams to watch out for are Jefferson and Stockton. Jefferson gave Lutheran a run for their money at sectionals but came up three seconds short. Stockton has a good group of athletes on the quartet – Joise Pyle (2:21 800), Emilyn Dearman (45.28 300H), Rachel Wheeler (5:31 1600), and Alexi Smith (2:27 800/64 400).
