Preview
While three teams come in fairly close in the rankings, I am going to pick Hazelwood Central the favorite. They enter three guys in the open 400, Matt Quarells, Marcus Davis, and Brandon Chunn. These three men have all run in the 48’s and rank in the top five. Their top two, Quarrels and Davis, have the top two times in the 400. Davis has some endurance as he comes in with the top 800 time in Class 4. To round out their top four they have Kendall Preston, a guy who has run 50.69 in the open 400 this year. I don’t think the 3:14.04 State record set almost 30 years ago is out of the question for these guys. A year ago this squad got second place, finishing second behind Liberty who also returns. The two other teams that enter with a time below 3:20 are McCluer North and Lee’s Summit West. Mccluer North gave Hazelwood Central a strong run at districts, running 3:18.63 to finish less than half a second back. Lee’s Summit West is performing when it matters, running their season best mark of 3:19.91 at sectionals to give them the third seed for the state meet.
