Two teams look incredibly strong and deep. McCluer North and Francis Howell come in with great squads. They faced off at sectionals with McCluer North recording a state best time, 3:51.19. It’s no surprise looking at their squad. They have two girls who have run sub 60 seconds for the quarter, Micheala Woods and Rachel Culberson. Culberson ranks fifth in the state, running 57.36 at the same meet. To round out their four, they feature two of the top three 300H including top ranked Kimberlin Simon. There is no gap in this team as all four runners can run sub 60 with some of them capable of running in the 55 to 56 second range. However they will have to top Francis Howell, a team that won last year and returns three of the four legs from that squad. Most importantly, the return the 2012 champ and top 400 runner in the state, Whitney Adams. She split 53.8 this weekend to bring her team within a little over two seconds of McCluer. Another open event champion, defending 800m champ, Valeska Halamicek runs a leg on this relay. It looks like the other two legs, Breanna Wages and Taylor Knoche have run just over 60 seconds for the open 400. Other teams that come in looking strong on paper are McCluer, Ladue, and Central (St. Joseph). McCluer was third in the super competitive Sectioanl 2 meet, running a MO#3 3:55.83. Ladue is the Class 4 record holder in this event, running 3:48 two years ago. Central, the top team from the Kansas City area, features Brady Rodney, the second best 400 girl in the state, running 56.42 seconds this weekend and second ranked 800 runner, Paityn Howat (2:15.23 this weekend).
