Hannah Long has established herself as the strong favorite, despite returning champ Valeska Halamicek back in the field. Long, who ran 2:11.79, comes in with almost a four second gap on the next competitor. With her not running the 3200, she has the freedom to put more effort into the prelims and finals. After the Eureka sophomore there is a close pack with five girls capable of finishing second, assuming Long wins. The girls from Sectional 4 are looking incredible, led by freshman Paityn Howat and senior Lane Maguire. Howat edged out Maguire, who was fifth a year ago at the state meet, by one one hundredth of a second. The Central St. Joseph frosh finished 8th in her first quality 800 field at the Kansas Relays. Maguire anchored her St. Teresa’s squad a year ago to victory in the 4x800m, overtaking the lead 10 meters into her leg. Sabrina Monsees was just over half of a second back from the two, finishing in under 2 minutes and 16 seconds. Just over that mark is Halamicek who was able to break away from Long in the last 150m of last year’s state meet. Her only loss this season came at the Kansas Relays where she finished seventh (Long finished first). Ranked sixth, Annika Sisson was the fourth and final qualifier out of the toughest sectional which saw the seventh fastest time in the state finish fifth. Sisson recorded the fastest time in Missouri indoors, running 2:18.37 in January. After a mid-season injury she came back a week before districts and has run the sixth fastest time in Class 4, 2:16.15.
