Preview
This race promises to be one of the most exciting of the weekend with Spencer Haik and Noah Kauppila facing off with a slew of other great milers. Haik burst past the field in the last 100m as a sophomore to take the title. He showed it wasn’t a one-time thing, showing off his powerful kick again at the Kansas Relays, this time beating Class 3 champ Amos Bartelsmeyer. Noah has run 4:13.22, the second best time in Class 4. Since his incredible 8:54 3200m it has been all speed for the Marquette junior, even having run an open 400m. He has improved his 800 greatly in the past couple of week, showing he has been working on his speed. There is no doubt he is ready to compete against Haik. Others to watch for are Elvir Sarajlic, Brian Hernan, and Cole Rockhold. Sarajlic always surprises people with how fast he runs, busting a 4:14.42 earlier this year. The Oakville junior is the real deal and could without question come out on top if he has a good race. Hernan was a bit behind Sarajlic and Kauppila at the Suburban West meet, running 4:15.87. The future Missouri Tiger is the only senior ranked in the top six. Rockhold won the KU Relays 3200m and doubled back with a strong 4:16. Rockhold is yet another incredibly talented junior in this field. Two others to watch for – super sophomore Stephen Mugeche and Central St. Joe’s Brett Bachman.
