Storms runs 15:59 at Longview to win WCC meet
O'Hara junior Max Storms raced to a 15:59 victory in the West Central Conference meet Tuesday afternoon on the Longview course.
On a cool and crisp fall day, Storms ran a tactical race with Harrisonville sophomore Maksim Korolev. They ran side-by-side for most of the first two miles. Both went went through the first mile in around 5:05 and hit the second mile at around 10:24.
Then Storms surged. He quickly picked up the pace and left Korolev behind on the last 1.1 miles, running at 5-minute pace. Korolev finished second in 16:24.
By comparison, Storms' finishing time was ahead of the 16:14 posted by Raytown South's Stephen Saylor almost three weeks ago, when Saylor won the Grandview Invitational.
That race was a bit earlier in the season and in slightly warmer conditions.
