Salute to Seniors: Landon Hendrickson

When did you first start running, and do you recall any of your childhood races?
I first started running at the Running River Annual 5K when I was young. I gained a love for distance running on those trails.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
No, surprisingly. It was very gradual, I never had any realizations I just kept competing in the moment.

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
Yeah, I've had my fair share of injuries and setbacks, but none of them hurt as bad as getting over a mental plateau.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
It didn't really, just more peaceful long runs. I was pretty bummed about our junior track season being canceled though.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
Yes, Virginia Tech. It was the perfect fit with location and academic rigor. Super excited.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
I never tried pole vault. Never even held a pole. I always wanted to try it, it's kind of it's own thing and pole vaulters are super cool.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
I like most anything that goes fast; I work on cars a lot and build race engines.

What is the best advice you have received?
"It doesn't matter what you eat, as long as you're eating." -My Cross Country Coach

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?
Football, I always loved the team environment of football, plus I know I could throw down as a wide receiver.
