2022 MSHSAA State Track & Field Championships Class 1 Girls
Drexel tallied 46 points to win the Class 1 Girls title. The virtual state meet favorites from sectional performances, Drexel claimed the 4x100 title in 51.71 after taking 3rd in the prelims in 51.18 with Emily Wheeler, Gracie Marks, Isabella Richardson, and Jose Parks.
Junior Emily Wheeler scored in both hurdle races, taking 2nd in the 100-meter hurdles running into the wind in 16.20, before taking 6th in the 300-meter hurdles in 49.26.
Wheeler took 4th in the triple jump with a best of 10.59m/34-09''. Olivia Shipps took home two top-3 finishes in the throws for Drexel. She was 2nd in the discus with a best of 36.45m/119-07 and added six more team points with a 3rd-place finish in the shot put with a mark of 11.75m/38-06.75''.
Drexel - 1st
Valle Catholic got 21 points in the 800 and 1600-meter runs on Day 1 to lead coach Samer Zoughaib's squad to a second-place team finish. On Friday afternoon, senior Camryn Basler and freshman Madelyn Griffard went 3-4 in the 1600-meters in 5:35 to score 11 points. A couple of hours later senior Samantha Loida beat 1600-meter champ Adrien Martens of St. Paul Lutheran-Concordia and the field to win the 800-meters in 2:19.20.
On Saturday, Basler returned to the track and earned a 5th-place 3200-meter finish in 12:32 to add 4 team points. Valle's 4x100 and 4x200 squad didn't qualify for the finals but the 4x400 and 4x800 added big points, taking 4th and 2nd in 4:23 and 10:12. Ella Bertram added 3 points with a 6th-place finish in the shot put.
Valle Catholic - 2nd
Senior superstar Kendall Holweg led Delta to the 3rd-place team trophy. Holweg won six races, three events and nearly a 4th to score all of Delta's 38 points. Holweg comfortably won the 100 in 12.54 and the 200 in 26.59, running into the wind after a 25.62 preliminary time into a slight wind.
After a 46.77 300-hurdle prelims clocking, Holweg captured the state title in 47.36, by 98/100ths of a second over the rest of the field. In the long jump, Holweg went 5.17m/16-11.50'' to take second, by the slimmest of margins, 0.01-meters. On her final attempt, Albany's Abigail Troncin leaped 5.18m/17-00'' to win by ½ an inch.
Three 1st-places and a second-place finish add up to an amazing state meet for Holweg. Delta had three qualifiers including Adisen Crowden and Presley Holweg.
Delta - 3rd
The Tarkio/East Atchison girls were one point back of Delta with 37 points to earn the 4th-place team trophy. Tarkio scored most of their points in the relays, capturing the 4x400 and 4x800 titles with a trio of Martins: Sophia Martin, Claire Martin, and Tommi Martin, while Grace Oswald joined them in the 4x800 and Elizabeth Schlueter ran on the 4x400.
Tommi Martin was 2nd in the javelin with a best of 37.84m/124-02'' and 5th in the open 800-meters in 2:24. Schlueter was 4th in the 300-hurdles in 48.64
Tarkio/East Atchison
Princeton was 5th, scoring 34.5 points while Stanberry racked up 31 points for 6th and Wellington-Napoleon 7th with 30 points behind runner-up finishes in the 4x100 and 4x200. St. Paul Lutheran (Concordia) senior Adrien Martens won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs with ease in 5:27 and 12:07 while taking 2nd in the 800 in 2:22 and clearing 4-9 to take tie for 8th in the high jump. That totaled 28.5 points to place St. Paul Lutheran 8th.
Jasper got wins from Crystal Smith in the 100-hurdles (16.02 into a 1.3m/ps wind) and high jump (1.60m/5-3''), plus a runner-up finish in the 200 in 27.29 into the wind after a preliminary 26.57 into a slight wind. That gave Jasper 28 points, good enough for 9th, just ahead of Galena in 10th with 27 points.
