The hosts had an impressive day at Joplin Varsity Invitational on April 12.
Joplin's boys track and field squad won 10 events and earned 24 medals in running away from the field for a first-place finish by nearly 60 points.
"Really good day," Joplin head coach Nick Reid said. "Field events, sprints, long distance. Everybody just came together and had a bunch of PR's. A lot of people competed really well."
Senior distance runner Hobbs Campbell, the Class 5 runner-up in the 1600 last season who also placed fifth in the 800 and fifth in the 4x800 relay, focused Wednesday on the only school record that's so far eluded him.
He already owns the Eagles' top mark in the mile, 3200, 5K and 4x8 and chased the school record of 1:54.06 in the 800 at the home meet. He finished the event Wednesday in 1:56.65, earning him a first-place finish by more than eight seconds.
"My goal going into the race was to break the school record, that's what it was centered around but I don't think the conditions really helped me out very much," Campbell said. "It's kind of windy and I was by myself, but recently I've been going out slow in the 800's so my whole goal was to go out really hard and see what I could do after that. That's what I did so I'm proud of it. Today is just a warmup for KU Relays this weekend, that's what we're really focusing on."
"I'll get it this year," he said of the record.
Noah Soriano, Chance Tindall, Cordell Washington, Davin Thomas and Orion Norris each won multiple events on Wednesday to help the winning cause.
Soriano bested his seed time in winning the 200 in 21.84 seconds and also ran on the 4x100 relay (Quinton Renfro, Davin Thomas, Orion Norris, Noah Soriano) that won in 43.25 seconds, another PR.
With Campbell focusing on the 800, Tindall handled business in the 1600 and 3200 with winning times of 4:42.13 and 10:48.03, respectively. His 1600 time was more than 14 seconds better than his seed.
Washington posted a PR while winning the 110 hurdles in 16.35 seconds and added a win in the high jump with a height of 1.82 meters.
Thomas ran the second leg of the 4x100 and the fourth leg of the 4x200 (Tayshaun Palmer, Orion Norris, Fredy Cerrato-Martinez, Davin Thomas) that won in 1:33.15.
Other Joplin winners were Avarus Kuhn-Wofford, who PR'd in the 300 hurdles with a time of 41.93 seconds; and Dontrell Holt in the shot put, who won with a throw of 15.33 meters.
"We're kind of starting to peak," Reid said. "Our training, we're supposed to peak end of May so we're still pretty early as far as training goes but we had some really good times so it's really exciting for us still to come a month from now when we hit districts, sectionals and state."
Webb City, which followed Joplin's 251.50 points with 193.50 and placed second, won six events.
William Wolfe blew past his seed time in the 100 and won in 10.86 seconds. The Cardinals' 4x400 relay of Jadon Brisco, Noah Moss, Mason Hedger and Gabriel Johnson won in 3:37.58, and the 4x00 relay of Hedger, Dakota Grove, Atticus Luzadder and Evan Stevens won in 8:32.22, more than 34 seconds better than the seed time.
Webb City's Justin Allen won the pole vault with a jump of 4.10 meters, Nathaniel Miller won the discus throw with a distance of 40.50 meters and Trey Roets captured the javelin throw with a distance of 51.65 meters.
Pittsburg (Kan.) High School's Johan Arriola won the 400 in 53.62 seconds, Nevada's Drew Beachler won the long jump at 6.50 meters, and Nevada's Jackson Cheaney won the triple jump at 12.66 meters, a PR.
