MSHSAA C1 T&F Boys 3rd, 4th place teams

The Class 1 MSHSAA boys track and field championship title race was a close one this year.

The top four teams were separated by 10 points with Hermitage and Hayti tying for first place. That battle was one that went down to the wire.

The final two trophies went to Crystal City and King City - separated by one point, 33-32.

Crystal City - 3rd

The Hornets from Jefferson County medaled in four events and was boosted by getting 18 points in the long jump.

The other points came from fourth-place finishes.

Freshman Alex Kuchera was fourth in the pole vault. Mayes added a fourth in the 110-meter hurdles.

Bolton, Mayes, Cohen Compton and Landynn DeRousse were fourth in the 4x100 - moving up from sixth after prelims.

Trophy count: 14th overall; last trophy was in 2007; third was the third third-place finish joining teams from 1981 and 1944.

King City - 4th place

The Wildkats from Northwest Missouri relied on sprints to pick up points in two relays and two dashes.

Ty Mooney was part of all of them.

The senior won the 200-meter dash in 22.31, becoming the eighth individual boys state champion in school history and the first since 2014.

He was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash by the slimmest of margins. East Atchison' s (Tarkio) Jarrett Spinnatto won in 11.08 and Mooney was next at 11.09.

Mooney joined Brodhi Ramirez, Cooper Mooney and Ron Pulliam in both the 4x100 (third) and 4x200 (second) relays.

Trophy count: 2; the only other boys track and field trophy was in 1965 when Roger Wehrli, an All-American and College Football Hall of Famer for Mizzou, and Pro Football Hall of Famer as defensive back for the St. Louis football Cardinals, - led the Wildkats to the Class C title with three state championships.

King City scored 30.5 points to place 5th at last year's state meet, one place and 8.5 points behind 4th and the last team trophy.
