Nixa's Cantwell wins 2 awards at sports commission banquet

The Missouri Sports Hall of Fame and the Springfield Sports Commission held their 11th annual Sports Commission Awards on Tuesday, June 20.

The ceremony at the Ozark Empire Fairground in Springfield recognized the best of high school athletics throughout southwest Missouri during the 2022-23 with nominees chosen by a selection committee. More than 200 student-athletes and 900 guests took part in the event.

Athletes will be recognized in tennis, golf, swimming and diving, cross country, softball, soccer, volleyball, football, wrestling, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Sports offered to girls and boys are split into their respective categories.

Winners for cross country were Kickapoo's Tyler Harris Kickapoo and Webb City's Abigail Street.

In boys track and field, Nixa's Jackson Cantwell was the field winner, while Camdenton's Angel Dickerson was the track winner.

In girls track, Jasper's Crystal Smith took home the honors. Kickapoo's Taylor Mayo was the field athlete of the year.

Cantrell also took home the boys' performance of the year after breaking the state record in the shot put in the MSHSAA Class 5 finals.
