Class 1-2 XC Runners to Watch

Last week we listed the top 10 returners for Class 1-2. David Everett is back with a look at some other athletes that appear poised to have a great cross-country season.

Class 1 Boys

3. Chase Barbarick

Barbarick will play a key role in helping Linn attempt be the first team besides College Heights to win the Class 1 Boys title.  He finished 11th last year in XC but focused on sprints during the spring.  Look for him to help his team win many more meets this year.

2. Nick Kline

Kline finished in the back of a pack of three Valle Catholic runners last fall at State where he finished 22nd. This spring he just missed all state in the 3200m run finishing 9th with a time of 10:36.  He also ran a leg on Valle Catholic's state winning 4x800m Relay team.

1. Corey Schoene

Schoene was All-State in two events this past spring but it wasn't your typical combination.  He finished fourth in the 1600m and was the Pole Vault champion.  He finished 10th this past fall but with four of the nine people in front of him being seniors he could easily slip into the top five.

Class 1 Girls

3. Sara Kurpejuweit

Kurpejuweit had a down race at State last year which led to a 83rd place finish.  Her PR of 21:46 shows she is capable of a much higher placing though.  During the spring she ran the 1600m and finished 13th at State.

2. Paige McHugh

McHugh did not run State last year, but she showed in track season she is capable of a top finish in the fall this year. She finished 6th in the 3200m and 10th in the 3200m.  If healthy, McHugh should be able to be in the mix.

1. Stephaney Ferguson

Ferguson was 14th in the fall and qualified for two events this spring.  The outcome was an 8th place finish in the 1600m and 9th place finish in the 3200m.  Coming into her sophomore year, Ferguson looks like a strong contender for a top ten finish this fall.

Class 2 Boys

3. Zach Trimble

Trimble just missed the top 10 returners with his 17:05 from districts.  Last year at State he just missed the All-State cut off finishing 28th.  His teammate, Jacob Drilling, who is the second fastest Class 2 returner, will certainly give him a push in practice and help him make the jump to All-State this year.

2. James Winkler

Winkler comes back leading the St. Pius team after their third place finish last year lead by a 1-3 finish by Drew Keefer and David Stodden. Winkler was also a big part of that team, finishing 15th.  His PR sits at 17:00 but that should quickly change this year.

1. Brett Voss

Voss returns after finishing 14th last year as a sophomore.  His track season was highlighted by a 4:45 1600m time, which helped him finish 13th at State.  He was also on Blair Oak's All-State 4x800m team.  Watch for Voss to be in the top pack for Class 2 this year.

Class 2 Girls

3. Jennifer Gustin

While Gustin did not compete this year in track, she still had a very impressive freshman year.  The reason she makes the list is because of her 11th place finish at State XC.  If she has still been running she will be a threat this fall.

2. Kate Steiger

The Cuba Senior is coming off a 27th place finish at State XC and a great track season where she ran bests of 5:27 and 12:03.  The 3200m time was good enough to put her 6th at State Track.

1. Emily Cumpton

Cumpton finished 21st last year but this spring showed she is ready to finish in the top 10.  She recorded a fifth place finish in the 1600m (5:19) and third place finish in the 3200m (11:45).  She also tacked on another All-State finish being a part of Blair Oak's 6th place 4x800m Relay.
