Even with the graduation in recent years of some great Missouri female runners, the future looks very competitive. The 2011-2012 season brings a number of promising freshman runners on the girls side including Samantha Phillips who will be attending Lee's Summit West. Samantha was the 2010 CCCNYC Missouri Valley Regional Champion and runner up in the 3000 meters at the national indoor AAU meet. Over the next few weeks MoMileSplit wlll be introducing a few of the new runners that will be competing this season. Up first 5 questions with Samantha Phillips.
MileSplit: Samantha – Welcome to high school. How was your first official week of practice?
Samantha: Thank you! My first week of official practice was amazing. The team bonds extremely well, and the training isn't much different than what I'm used to. I am definitely looking forward to a great season!
MileSplit: You’ve joined a team with a rich tradition of winning; tell us about how they welcome the new members of the team?
Samantha: The team was very welcoming towards the freshman and other new runners, and excited to see so many other girls who share their passion for running. We've had a team grill out and breakfasts after morning practice which helps us get to know each other better. We are one big family already!
MileSplit: You have competed in some big races (Middle school championships, CCCNYC, AAU, USATF) – Any favorite memories?
Samantha: That's a tough question. CCCNYC 2010 in Lexington, Kentucky is certainly one of them. I felt very strong throughout the race, and got a really good start. I also enjoyed the KC Metro Middle School Championship my seventh grade year. Running side by side with Aubrey Hirsch the entire race has definitely become a career highlight for me.
MileSplit: What runners did you most look up to when you were in middle school?
Samantha: When I was in middle school, I really looked up to Kierstin West, Aubrey Hirsch, Samantha Nightingale, Chelsey Phoebus, and Taylor Hynes. They are all very talented runners, and knowing them from club cross country, I wasn't afraid to ask for advice. I also look up to Brandon Daniels, my club cross country coach.
MileSplit: – What are you most looking forward to in high school?
Samantha: I'm most looking forward to the cross country and track seasons, and hopefully being able to contribute to such a strong team. I have a feeling this is going to be a great season. I'm looking forward to several big meets, but I'm also excited about smaller meets, practices, and especially pasta parties!
