Recap by Yael: Blue Springs South senior Samantha Nightingale led from start to finish to win the girls Class 4 Sectional 4 race on Saturday, while the LS West Titans put four runners in the top seven for the team victory.
The four Sectional 4 qualifiers for the Nov. 5 State Meet: LS West (37 points), St. Teresa's Academy (64), LS North (85) and Blue Springs (88).
That's a sweep for District 7 girls teams at Sectionals, powered by a surprisingly strong pack of Blue Springs runners to grab the final qualifying spot on a wonderful, crisp fall day.
Nightingale, the defending Class 4 State champion, took command of Saturday's race from the start, going through the first mile in around 5:26. She continued to lengthen the lead the entire way, finishing in 17:47.83. That's barely a second behind the time she ran last year on a slightly different course at Longview Community College.
The battle behind Nightingale for much of the race consisted of Lane Maguire of St. Teresa's, Kennadee Williams of LS West, Kiersten West of LS West and Hannah DeVries of North Kansas City. Maguire and Williams battled for the last half mile, with Maguire powering through to finish second in 19:00.11 followed by Williams in 19:01.67.
Looking ahdead to the Class 4 State Meet next Saturday: It will be important for LS West to get its No. 5 scoring runner closer to the top of the pack. The 4-time defending State champs will face a very strong Rock Bridge team as well as a host of other challengers on the Oak Hills course in Jefferson City.
Meanwhile, St. Teresa's continues to improve, helped by two freshmen runners - Ann Campbell and Hayden Lee - behind its steady leaders Lane Maguire and Courtney Coppinger. And the LS North squad still has the opportunity to regroup and make a strong impact at State as well.
