Caleb Wilfong signs with Iowa

Rock Bridge senior Caleb Wilfong has made his decision and will sign his letter-of-intent with the University of Iowa on Monday to continue his running career.

Wilfong said his final decision came down to the impression Iowa coach Larry Wieczorek made during the recruitment process.

“Coach Wieczorek is really good guy, and I had the feeling he is one of those coaches who will do anything for me,” Wilfong said.

Wilfong took all five of his official visits and also considered Georgetown, Oklahoma, University of Missouri-Kansas City and Minnesota.

The Hawkeyes have not given Wilfong any impression as to where he will fit on the team, but Wilfong said he fully expects to contribute immediately to the cross country team. Then he and the coaches will assess where he can have the greatest impact on the track.

Wilfong, who won the Missouri Class 4 state title with a 15:54 in November, has begun prepping for his final track season with the Bruins. He has started training with the same vigor he applied to the fall cross country season, but he admitted that having the state title in his back pocket has allowed him to shift his attention a little.

“Coming off a state championship, I don’t have to focus on going out and wrapping up a state championship in track,” Wilfong said. “I’m going to focus on running the fastest time possible. It would be nice to pick up another state championship, but the focus is on the state meet and running really, really fast.”

Wilfong posted a 1,600-meter run time of 4:12 for third place last spring as a junior at the state track meet. He was also ran a 9:27 for eighth in the 3,200.
