Beijing, Here we come

Missouri has four athletes booked and ready for the trip to Beijing for the 2008 Olympics.  Matt Tegenkamp, Muna Lee, Christian Cantwell and Jeff Hartwig all punched their tickets for the trip in Eugene, OR at the US Olympic Trials.

Former Eldon HS and Univerisity of Missouri shot putter, Christian Cantwill (above left) finished with the number two spot at the Olympic trials today. Christian threw 71-02.75 to finish behind Reese Hoffa and in front of Adam Nelson.

Former KC-Central standout, Muna Lee (left) ran a very strong race today to finish first in the 100m dash. Muna's time of 10.85 put her over Tory Edwards and Lauryn Williams who were both timed in 10.90. Muna also competed in the 200m dash and will be pulling double duty in Beijing after her second place finish behind Allyson Felix, running 21.99 to Allyson's 21.82.

Matt Tegenkamp (right) of Lee's Summit HS and Wisconsin fame made it thru the first round of the 5000m with the top time of 13:54.62. On Monday night in the 5000m finals he had to battle a severe side cramp and catch himself from a potentially dangerous trip with 300 meters to go to finish second in 13:29.68.

Former Francis Howell grad, 40 year old Jeff Hartwig (above left) flew on the wind to finish in second place in the pole vault with a leap of 18 feet, 8 inches. This will be his second trip to the Olympics after finishing 11th in Atlanta in 1996. He sat out in 2000 and 2004 after no-heighting at both trials. He missed his first two attempts, but salvaged his dream on his third and final attempt in the windy conditions.

Other action during the week was Lee's Summit North grad Chris Rohr, competing in the men's hammer throw. College Heights standout Seth Summerside competed in the 10,000m run.
