2021 Missouri Class 2 State Track Championships Recap

The 2021 Class 2 Missouri State Track & Field Championships are in the books, and it was definitely a record year. Seven Class 2 State Meet records went down on Friday, and their were plenty of great performances to go around.

The girls at STEAM Academy at McCluer South Berkeley had an impressive showing on Friday, winning every individual track event except for the 1600m and 3200m. They scored 80 points to win the team State Title, North Platte finished second with 58 points, West Platte was third with 35 points, and Blue Eye was fourth with 31 points.

The Melvin twins were a big part of the Bulldogs state title effort, earning two individual state titles each, and both running on their state championship 4x100 and 4x200 teams. Cheyenne Melvin won the 400m with a new Class 2 State Meet record of 56.17, and she also picked up the state title in the 800m. Chelby Melvin won both hurdle races, including a Class 2 State Meet record time of 43.23 in the 300m Hurdles.

Leah Thames picked up individual state championships in both the 100m and 200m, and combined with the Melvin twins and Safiyah Reed to win the 4x200m as well with a new Class 2 State Meet record of 1:41.18. The Melvins, Reed, and Myah Coleman combined to win the State Championship in the 4x400m as well to wrap the scoring for the champs.

On the boys side Father Tolton pulled off a clutch victory to win the team title. Heading into the 4x400m they were in fourth place with 34 points trailing Highland and Fayette who were tied with 42 points in first place. Neither of those schools had 4x400m teams, which meant a second place finish for Tolton would secure a three way tie for the State title, and a win would lock up sole possession of first.

Tolton came into the meet with the second fastest time behind Lutheran North. Father Tolton's team of Nathaniel Krebs, Braden Willmeth, Jared Aholt, and Garrett Wilmes though held off a late charge by Lutheran North to finish first place in the 4x4 with a time of 3:27.42 to Lutheran's 3:27.92 to earn the team title. Highland and Fayette tied for second with 42 points, and Lutheran North placed fourth with 39 points.

Krebs, Aholt, Wilmes, and Drew Freeman also combined to win the 4x800 earlier in the day. Garrett Wilmes took second place in the 800m, while Nathanial Krebs also took second place in the 400m and Long jump to round out the points for the champions.

Issam Asinga (Principia) had an absolute monster day in the sprinting events, setting three new Class 2 State Meet records. He ran 10.63 to win the 100m, 21.64 to win the 200m, and 48.17 to win the 400m. Three races, three records, three state titles. Not a bad first year of high school track for the sophomore.

Luke Nichols (Charleston) was the final record breaker, throwing for a Class 2 State Meet record of 55.65m to win the Javelin and secure the State Title in the event.

We will have more photo and video coverage this week from the meet so stay tuned!
