MSHSAA Class 1 Track and Field Championship Recap

Nodaway Valley's Riley Blay - called West Nodaway in the MSHSAA results, won the distance trifecta by taking first in the 800, 1,600 and 3,200. His brother, Tyler Bray, won the 3,200-meter last year.

Nodaway Valley/West Nodaway sophomore Riley Blay swept the 800, 1600, and 3200-meter races

Principia's Issam Asinga won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and set a pair of state records in each with blazing times in the prelims. He ran a wind-aided 10.41 in prelims of the 100 which would have broken the record set by Eli Mullock of Worth County in 2011 at 11.01 seconds, except for the higher than allowed wind behind him. So Asinga had to wait another day to break the record, which he did with minimal wind and a 10.69-second finals performance.

Later in the day, he broke the 200-meter record that stood since Larry Rogers ran 22.15 for Missouri School for the Deaf in 1980. Asinga had a time of 21.25 and ran 21.95 in the finals. Asinga now owns the Class 1 and Class 2 100 and 200-meter dash state meet records along with the Class 2 400-meter mark. The Class 2 state meet records were set last year when the Panthers were in Class 2. Asinga also anchored Principia's 2nd-place 4x200 and 3rd-place 4x100-meter relays.

Lakeland's Garrett Strange also won two titles at the meet, taking first in the discus and javelin. The latter throw of 55.97 meters broke the 2019 mark set by Clifton Bridgewater of Rich Hill, who threw 54.07. Strange's best throw came on his first attempt, but his third throw of 55.85 would've also broken the mark.
