MSHSAA Class 1 Track and Field Championship Recap


Delta's Kendall Holweg won three titles for the Ladycats, becoming the first female athlete from her school to claim a state track title.

She took first in the 100 (12.54), 200 (26.59) and 300-meter hurdles (47.30) and was a runner-up finish away in the long jump from joining Buggs-Tipton with four titles.

In fact, the school had only one other state champion in the sport: John Foster, who won two titles in 1966. Her showing also helped the Ladycats bring home the school's first-ever trophy, taking third place with 38 points, to take third place.

Two athletes won two titles each. Jasper freshman Crystal Smith took first in the high jump on Friday and then won the 100-meter hurdles on Saturday. Adrien Martens of St. Paul Lutheran (Concordia) won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs.

The East Atchison - referred to as Tarkio by MSHSAA - won the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays, winning the first race and the last Class 1 Girls race of the day Saturday. Sophia Martin, Grace Oswald and Tommi Martin were on each of the relays for the Wolves, joined by Claire Martin and Elizabeth Schlueter.
