Unsurprisingly, Rock Bridge senior Casey Hood led the way in the 60m and 200m dash through the end of February. Last spring, he led the Bruins to a convincing team championship in Class 5 with second place finishes in the both the 100 and 200 meter dashes. He also posted legs on the state champion 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

West Plains' Heston Miller was not too far off and was a standout in his own right last spring. Miller went undefeated in the 100m dash until the Class 4 state finals where he placed 2nd. He was 5th in the 200 and ran on their 4th place 4x100 and runner-up 4x200 relays.

One to watch is Joplin sophomore Noah Soriano. Soriano finished top 5 in the 60m dash and 200m dash a year after posting no marks between the Carthage Varsity Invitational on March 31st to Region 16 AAU Qualifier on June 23rd. We may see a breakout season from Soriano this spring.

Connor Burns has been operating on another level this winter, as to be expected. Burns has been garnering national attention for his assault on the national records in the 1 Mile and 2 Mile runs. While he has so far come up short in both, he enters March as the US No. 1 in the Mile and 2 Mile, respectively. This weekend, he made history as he became only the fifth high schooler to break 4:00 in the 1 Mile indoors. His indoor season is probably not over as he gears up for the national meet circuit next month.

Andrew Hauser and Hobbs Campbell also made significant noise with top 15 and 35 marks nationally, respectively, in the 1 Mile. Hauser also posted US No. 6 mark and MO state record in the 3k with his 8:22.93 at the Tyson Invitational. His 1 Mile mark was MO No. 2 all-time.

Keion Grieve continued to show his 800 meter prowess with a MO No. 6 all-time mark in his only race of the indoor season.

Triple Jump

Westminster Christian Academy's Joseph Anderson is a returning state champion in Class 3 in the triple jump and it appears he hasn't lost a step since earning that gold medal last May. He enters the season with long and triple jump bests outdoor of 22-3.75 and 46-8.75 to go along with these indoor bests.

Notre Dame Cape's Cole Bruenderman finished just behind Anderson in the triple jump and just ahead of him the long jump. He was 2nd and 3rd in each event in Class 3, respectively. The now-senior will look to cap off his successful high school career with a state title in one or both of the horizontal jumps.

Macon's Caelan Harland stole the show this winter in the vertical jumps with his 16-0 clearance in the pole vault. He has been consistent in the high 15s as well and should be a heavy favorite to repeat as the Class 3 state champion as a sophomore.

Ozark's Peyton Ligon is the high jump leader heading into March with his 6-3 clearance. Ligon was lucky number 8 last year at the Class 5 state championships and finished out his junior campaign with a 6-4.75 mark.

Boys Throws

Shot Put

Weight Throw

To the surprise of no one, Schuyler County's Hayden Dixon comes in as the top shot putter in the state this indoor season. Dixon has been steadily climbing in the event over the last year and now appears to be a force to reckoned with not just in Class 2, but in the entire state. If this is his last mark, he will finish out his high school career just under a foot better than any other Missourian in state history indoors.

Capital City's Sam Albert also had a strong showing this winter with his 57-7.25 mark in the shot put, a feat he pulled off in two separate meets. Albert was a Class 5 state qualifier in both the shot put and discus last spring, finishing 3rd in the shot and 16th in the discus. He carries personal bests of 59-11 from his AAU All-American performance and 164-0.5 into his senior season.
