Preview

It’s crazy to think – 7:58 didn’t make it to State this year.  Needless to say, this is an incredibly deep field.  Leading the charge is Marquette coming off a quick 7:52.53 to edge out Fox for the sectional title.  A trio of seniors makes this relay a tough one to beat.  Most everyone knows the name Noah Kauppila now, one of the best distance runners in the state and nation, running 8:54 for 3200m.  The junior has showed some speed this spring, running 1:55 for 800m.  Then there is Adam Roderique, a 4:19 miler who started slowly this season but is heating up, running 4:21 and 9:33 at sectionals.  A name that distance fans might not recognize that could play a huge role in their relay is Jared Michel, who currently ranks second in the 300 hurdles with a time of 38.37.  Their other leg from sectionals is Kevin Ganahl, a 2:02/4:38/9:55 runner. While this quartet looks strong, there are so many teams that are in the mix.  Fox was just a second back at sectionals.  They feature Cyle Quick, a 1:56 open 800 runner.  Also on the squad is Larry Lopez who has had a breakout season, running 9:33 and 4:26.  Rounding out there squad is Tommy Skosky, a transfer from Lindbergh where he was on the fourth place relay squad in 2012 and Keenen Hindes, on Fox’s squad that was disqualified.

We’ve gotten a paragraph in and we still even haven’t talked about the returning champs – Rockhurst.  This team has a top two that can contend with any team with Carson Bode at 1:56 and Alex Lombardo at 1:57.  Other teams to watch out for are Park Hill, St. Louis University High, Lafayette, and Lindbergh.  Park Hill has a great duo in Cain Winebrenner, winner of sectional 4 in the 800, and Kyle Pudenz, a 1:59 800 who ran 4:20 for 1600 at the Kasnas Relays.  SLUH has John Essewin, 1:57 for 800 this season.  This team is always competetive in this event – keep an eye on the Billikens. Lafayette was a second behind Fox, running 7:54 at sectionals.  They have a mixture of younger and older guys with freshman Dylan Quinsberry who has already run sub 1:59 in his young career.  They also add Jordan West, 1:59 for 800.  Lindbergh, fourth last year, brings back three of their four legs.  The trio might be the best in the state as they all enter with sub 2 minute performances led by the Pieper twins, Brad and Kyle who both have run 1:58.   Seeded all the way back in 10th is a team that has three guys who have all run 4:20 or better for 1600m – Blue Springs.

Again – This is a STACKED race.
