Schuyler Co.'s Dixon breaks 2 state records, wins 2 titles

Hayden Dixon's final track meet for Schuyler County was one for the record books.

The senior and future Missouri Tiger won the discus and shot put at the MSHSAA Class 2 championship last month in Jefferson City. He was the first Class 2 thrower to win the shot put-discus combo since Malden's Robert Wilson in 2018.

Dixon won the discus with a throw of 53.14 meters - 174 feet, 4 inches - and broke a state record in the process.Carrollton's Chase Ewing had the previous mark of 173-11 in 2011.

That came after he was second in the sectional meet, falling to Westran's Langden Kitchen. He beat him at the state meet - one of only two losses this year in discus - when Kitchen placed third. Dixon won 10 of 12 meets this year and lost to Class 1 champion Shon Stark  of Highland in the Gary Ewing Invitational earlier this year.

He also broke the state record in the shot put with a throw of 19.75 meters - 64-9 3/4 - and set a new Class 2 record there as well. The previous mark stood since 2006 when Andy Oaker of Steelville threw 63-8.

Dixon was a runner-up in 2022 but was unbeatable in 2023 - winning all 13 of his meets.

His biggest win came in the Bill Summa Invitational in Independence at William Chrisman. He beat four other all-staters in that meet, including Class 1 champion Tucker Singer of Tina-Avalon; Javon Smith of Liberty North, sixth in Class 5; Tyler Kerhoff of Staley, fourth in Class 5 and Derek Joiner of Grandview, the Class 4 champion.

Dixon ended his career with a first, second and third at the state meet in shot put. He won 27 of the 37 meets he entered and won 22 of his final 24 meets.

After the state meet, he participated in the Missouri vs. Illinois All-Star Track meet on June 2 in Quincy, Illinois. He won first in the shot and discus and was second in the javelin.
