Relays go off quick at KU

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Relays got off to a fast start Saturday.

Lincoln-Way East (IL) posted a new meet record in the girls 400-meter relay with a 47.36, replacing the 2007 mark of 48.21 set by Tulsa (OK). Papillion-LaVista claimed the boys 400 relay in 41.94.

Hazelwood Central claimed the girls 800-meter relay in 1:41.96, just missing their Missouri-best time of 1:41.20. Saturday’s time came with freshman Devyn Torbert running the lead leg as a replacement for junior Felicia Lampley, who went down with a hamstring injury in the prelims of the 400-meter relay on Friday.

Hazelwood Central coach Glenn Norwood said they are unsure of the extent of the Lampley’s injury. And while the coaches may have found a replacement on the 800 relay, the 400 relay spot remains a question mark. Sprinter Ashley Henderson has room in her meet schedule, but Norwood said they are trying to keep all their girls running a light load.

“We’d like to keep everyone at three events to rest and recover at state,” Norwood said. “We’re looking at Ashley or a couple other freshmen for the 4x100.”

Hazelwood Central also won the boys 400 relay with a time of 1:28.73.

Francis Howell began the day by winning the girls 1,600-meter sprint medley in 4:15.14. Blue Valley won the boys sprint medley in 3:33.42.
