What was you most memorable meet or race?
I have two most memorable meets. Both are the sectional meets of my senior year, which included some firsts. In cross-country, it was the first time we qualified our team to the state meet since 2002, and in track, it was the first time I was able to qualify for the state meet.
Who was your biggest competition?
My biggest competition would probably be my twin brother Jeff. We started running together since way back in elementary school, and I have always thought that since I can't really be better looking than him, I might as well be faster than him. Well after many years of running against each other I don't want to bore you with all the stats, but if their is one thing you should know, it is that I have the fastest 1600 time.
Kidding aside though, it never really mattered who won; it was just fun as long as we were both competitive and ran good races, preferably finishing 1st and 2nd. This past track season was probably one of our most competitive seasons head-to-head, which had a lot to do with me becoming more consistent in both practice and races, and I look forward to hopefully having more seasons like that as we both start running at K-State next fall.
If you could do it all over again is there anything you would change?
If there was one thing I would change it would be to race all four years with the confidence and enthusiasm I ran with this past track season. It was by far my most consistent season.
Out of all your high school accomplishments, which stands out the most?
An accomplishment that stands out the most would be qualifying for the state track meet in the 1600 this past year. For the first three years I was never able to advance past districts, but this year I was finally able to break through and advance all the way to state. The state race didn't go exactly as I had hoped, but being able to compete in that type of atmosphere with that group of milers was definitely an awesome experience.
What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
The mental side of running. It took me a while to master my mental approach and to run with confidence, to where I was able to be consistent in both practice and races.
What will you miss the most?
The people.
Do you have any advice for younger athletes?
Relax and have fun. Whether it is practice or a race trust in yourself and believe that you are capable of accomplishing whatever goals you or your coach have for you. Also, make every race your own race, know what makes you successful and run according to that.
What are your college plans?
I am going to run at Kansas State University.
