Salute to Seniors: Stone Burke

When did you first start running, and do you recall any of your childhood races?
I started running in 7th grade. I raced at the Junior Olympics in 7th and 8th grade which was pretty fun.

Was there a certain moment when you realized you'd be able to compete at such a high level?
I've always been motivated to compete with the best of the best

What are some bumps in the road that you've encountered when it comes to training for different events during the season?
I've always had a problem with my achilles, but we always got it taken care of to where it didn't hurt me in the postseason.

How did COVID impact your training as you prepared for the season?
I got COVID after xc ended, so my Indoor track season got off to a slow start.

Where are you going to college? If you have already committed, what made you choose them?
I am running at Texas Christian University (TCU). I chose them because of their strong academic prowess, the location of the school, as well as the vision for the teams future success.

Let's discuss the college searching process. What was that like, and what schools did you look at?
I had been looking at schools since sophomore year. I would just constantly send out emails to get my name to college coaches. It was a very long and intense process, but well worth it. At the end my final schools were Pepperdine University, Baylor University, TCU, SIU Carbondale, DePaul University, University of Miami, and University of Maryland.

Is there another track event you wish you were good at? What is appealing about it?
I think it'd be pretty cool to be good at hurdles.

What are some hobbies and interests you have outside of running?
I like to hang out with my friends, go to concerts, play golf and fish.

Who is your role model, and why?
Probably Derek Jeter

Everyone has a bucket list, so give us some of things on your list!
Go skydiving, backpack Europe, go to Hayward Field

What is the best advice you have received?
Run fast, turn left

What is your favorite pre-race snack, tradition, etc.?
I always say a prayer before my races

If you could do a sport other than XC/Track, what sport would it be, and why?
Baseball because it is my favorite sport.
