FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Cody Fillinich didn't meet his own standards Friday night but he still reached uncharted territory in Northwestern State's proud track and field history, earning his fourth outdoor All-America honor in as many seasons at the NCAA Outdoor Championships.
NATCHITOCHES -- One-one hundredth of a second made all the difference Saturday in the Northwestern State NCAA Regional Qualifying Meet at the Walter Ledet Track Complex. Northwestern sophomore P.J. Bennett squeaked into the NCAA Mideast Regional Championships in two weeks with his third-place 14.30 time Saturday, right on the regional qualifying standard for the 110 meter hurdles.
Bennett was the only new qualifier in the meet from any team Saturday, but Demons' senior Daniel Yarbrough set a new personal record and improved his regional ranking with a second-place 172-8 discus throw, 18 inches better than his previous best. Winner Jon Tipton of Sam Houston State uncorked a big 196-6 throw, also a season's best, that moved him from 12th to seventh nationally. Three other competitors already qualified for the regional championships exceeded the regional standards but not their season's best marks Saturday. In the men's 110 meter hurdles, perhaps the day's best race was won by the Demons' Michael Hill in 14.10 over Southern's Patrick Jones (14.14). Both have 13.95 season best times that rank 30th nationally. Also topping the NCAA Regional standard in a winning performance was Sam Houston triple jumper Chris Gilchrist, winning with a 50-0 3/4 leap. Hill said his time was bittersweet. "If I had run that last week, I would have won at conference," he said, referring to a surprising third-place finish in the 110 meter hurdles final at the Southland Conference Championships. Bennett became the 11th NCAA Mid-East Regional qualifier from Northwestern this spring. He and Hill give NSU dual entries in three events. Yarbrough and Corey Jones have qualified in the discus, while Cody Fillinich and Jake Bray are in the regional javelin competition. Also headed to the regional meet from Northwestern: Michael Green in the 400 meter dash, Jones in the shot put, Yarbrough in the hammer, DeJon Griffin in the women's hammer and the Demons' 4x400 meter relay team.
Athletes from McNeese, Stephen F. Austin, Texas State, Sam Houston State, Texas-Arlington, Southern, Jackson State, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana-Monroe and the Athletic Performance Improvement club team competed in the meet.
