Scouting Report: Lee's Summit West HS Girls

Lee's Summit West Girls

When you win five state championships in a row its pretty much impossible to pick against the Titans.  They look strong as ever this year as they return four runners from the top 26.  Kennadee Williams, who finished 13th last fall, had a great spring running 5:05 to finish fourth in the 1600m.  Samantha Phillips returns from a strong freshman season in which she finished 22nd at state. The top returner, Kiersten West, comes back from a tenth place finish last fall but brings along little sister, Kortney, who has run 5:35 for the mile in middle school. With all seven runners returning from their state team last fall, this team looks great.

Coach Griffin Says...

"Our girls have had a solid summer of training and should be ready to go at the end of the season when the meets are important.  All our training is geared towards continually building base throughout the year and becoming aerobically fit.  We have added some depth that was not there last year which is always a huge boost.  The core of our team returning from last year have had some big meet experience running at the Woodbridge Invitational in California, Roy Griak Invitational in Minnesota, the Nike Midwest Regional in Indiana and of course the state meet during the past two years.  If our girls stay healthy and can focus on the task at hand each week, it should be another exciting season of Titan cross country."

"This year will be the year of firsts since I have been here at Lees Summit West High School. Our girls will run at the Forrest Park Cross Country Festival for the first time and also it will be first year the Rim Rock Invitational will be on our schedule.  Another first will be our trip to the prestigious Maymont Invitational in Richmond, Virginia the last weekend of September.  The Maymont Invitational will field very high caliber nationally ranked teams such as The Tatnall School out of Wilmington, Delaware that placed 3rd at NXN last season. All the meets on our schedule are in place to help prepare the girls for the rigor our state meet presents.  After state we would once again like to take a trip to Terre Haute, Indiana and run against the fine teams from Illinois and Indiana  in the Nike Midwest Regional."

"Our number one goal each year is to be prepared the best we possibly can be going into the state meet at the beginning of November.  All the meets early season are simply a dress rehearsal for state.  After the state meet we will see where we stack up in Indiana and see if we can improve on our 6th place finish at the NXN Midwest Regional last year."
