Rock Bridge Girls
Last year, Kayla Funkenbusch helped propel the Bruins to a second place finish. They lose four of their runners from the team including top finisher Sam Garrett. They still remain strong up front but will need to relay on newcomers to fill in for rest of the lineup. Funkenbusch and Megan Schulte both come back from their 25th and 28th place finishes. Include Sam Farmer, a 5:34 miler from the track season, and this team has a solid trio to begin the season.
Coach Blackburn Says...
"Our girls have been a pleasant surprise so far. At our camp in July, we had four girls step up and do things that we hadn't yet accomplished, finishing under 19:00 together. "
"I feel good about our girls as well, although the inexperience factor will definitely reside with this team as we will be quite young. Kayla Funkenbusch is coming off of a very solid freshman year in which she also battled mono, but still managed to be all-state in cross, run 11:19 for the 3200 in track, and gain valuable experience racing and training. One of our cross country newcomers is Sam Farmer who made her debut on the track for us last spring as a 9th grader running 2:25 and 5:26 respectively. She went 18:44 in a 3 mile time trial back in July, finishing a couple of seconds behind Kayla. Megan Schulte will enter her senior year and she has been a consistent force whether training or racing in cross country and track. She went 5:25, 2:24 last spring along with running well under 12 minutes for 2 miles. She has been all-state in cc before and very close last year, so I think she can really be one of our leaders once again. I think she can definitely challenge her 19:10 pr again this year. Another newcomer is Marilise Stamps who ran 5:28 in 8th grade and finished with Megan around 18:52 at our trial. We have another freshman, a couple of seniors, and a junior who will all mix it up to round out our scoring 5 and close as our 6-7. I am excited to see these girls mesh together and hopefully maintain the success that our past girls' squads have had, especially our break-through group from a year ago."
"Our schedule is the same as the boys. We are excited about the addition of regionally ranked Lees Summit West to an already stacked Forest Park meet. I think being a team that finishes in the top 5 there will really be one to watch as the season unfolds. "
"Our goals are similar to our boys' team. We believe that if we control our not so little things; paying attention to our diet, sleep patterns, stretching, icing, and recovery, that we have a great opportunity to compete with some of the more elite teams from across the state. We want to control and enjoy our journey, relishing in the togetherness of team with sights always set on achieving what we possibly can and letting the results shake out as they will. "
