Rockwood Summit Girls
Rockwood Summit will be led once again by Alyssa Jones. Jones, who enters her senior year, has been one of the best runners in Missouri for a couple of years now. She has dipped under 11 minutes for the 3200m and returns from her 12th place finish from last fall. Rachel Brekrus broke 20 minutes in her freshman season and finished 78th at the state meet. Michelle Shamroe, who ran 22:45 in cross country, had a fantastic freshman track season running 2:20 and 5:38. Their fourth girl last fall, Megan Morris, will also return for her sophomore season coming in with a PR of 20:45. Add in freshman Melissa Menghini, who ran 19:30 at the XC Kick-Off, this team has depth and a great first runner.
Coach Miller Says...
"The team is looking good as the season is getting started. The girls have really worked hard over the summer together and they are confident in their training and motivated to improve upon their finish from last year. We’re deeper really than we’ve ever been; we should have 10 or more girls that are ready to contribute as varsity runners this season. It will also lead to more success at the JV level as well where we have a good group of kids that work really hard too. The goal is always to develop a pack of athletes that can score relatively low. I think with the personnel we have this year, considering the experience they gained as freshmen and sophomores last year at the state meet, they are ready to make a move up. Of course Alyssa Jones is our senior leader and we expect her to have a really good season. Her supporting cast will be strong too, so we’re very happy with the amount of work they put in this summer. A solid group of girls ran together all summer, freshmen all the way up to our senior, so they are fit at this point. "
"The highlights of our schedule will be at Forest Park, at Sioux Passage for the Enke Invitational, as well as Hancock and Parkway West Invitationals. We like to think there is something of worth at each of those meets, whether it’s the hills at Sioux Passage or the size of the field at Forest Park or the level of competition at each of them being really high, each of them serves a purpose in preparing a team for the postseason. "
" We really believe this sport is our opportunity to help young people develop leadership and goal setting skills and learn about how to apply determination and discipline, things they’ll need in the “real world” that will make them better and successful people. We want the athletes in the program to develop a lifelong appreciation for running, as there are so many good benefits from the running lifestyle.
The girls have set some lofty competitive goals for this season too. They all have experience and have tasted a level of success. I think this year they understand that the group is really strong and they want to take advantage of that. They all know they can contribute to a very successful season, and they have also bought into the “team first” concept. Alyssa has done a fantastic job as a role model for the younger girls, just in her work ethic and the attention to detail that she brings to the table. She is the complete package when it comes to a cross country runner and teammate. She is unselfish and the rest of the team feeds off of that and they all want to work for each other over individual goals. "
