Week 5: Scorching Heat Cannot Stop Scorching Times

Overstreet Over Venable, Sorrells Are Fast at East Newton

The East Newton course is a notoriously fast one, but just how fast is it? How about Lamar sophomore Kolin Overstreet going 15:58 and beating out his teammate Mark Venable, who ran 16:10? Overstreet's race was head-turning and showed just how solid this Lamar team is. Ethan Pittsenbarger has solidified himself as a solid #3 for the Tigers and Lamar has solidified itself as the far and away best team in Class 2. East Newton's Caleb Jackson and Jacob Bennion were 4th and 5th on the day, both rolling under 17:20. Sticking with the boys theme, in the Junior High race, Granby MS 8th grader Kelton Sorrell ran an unprecedented 7:57 for 2500m. The young man apparently was under 18:00 at Chile Pepper last fall as a 7th grader and could make it sub-17 at this year's festival.

On the girls side, Kelton's sister Emily Sorrell made her long-awaited season debut and torched the field, running a 19:53 and winning by 1:20. Sorrell was one of our top 5 Class 3 girls heading into the season and it appears that the Class 3 800 champion is poised to make that a reality this year. In the junior high race, another impressive time was had, this time by Carl Junction 8th grader Ally Montez. She ran 9:02 for 2500m and showed that Carl Junction HS may be very good now, but there is more to come very soon.
