Week 5: Scorching Heat Cannot Stop Scorching Times

Bensky, Driemeyer Pick Up Wins At Hazelwood West

The theme of the weekend was heat and the Terry Matheany/Hazelwood West Invitational at Koch Park was no different. Friday afternoon's race was run on a course that is often unforgiving when the temperature rises as there are very few places where one receives a reprieve from the sun. On the boys side, Lindbergh and Webster Groves shared the top 5 individual places as Lindbergh's Billy Driemeyer led the way, essentially from start to finish. His 17:20 was 8 seconds clear of Webster sophomore Charlie Teeter, who was just barely ahead of his teammate: senior Ben Gossow. Lindbergh's Connor Kingsland came across in 4th and Webster's Samuel Getz was 5th. Webster Groves crushed the field (in the JV Boys as well) winning with 27 points. Lindbergh was 2nd with 63 and host Hazelwood West was 3rd with 71.

Lila Bensky of Ladue was the individual champion on the girls side. Bensky was dominant in this one as she took the lead early and never looked back. The Ladue junior continues to impress and should continue to be on everyone's Class 4 watch list. Paige Hercules from Francis Howell North was 2nd followed by Ursuline's Catherine Dulle and FHN's Claire Huss. Howell North took home the team title. They are looking like a team who could upset Class 4 District 3 powerhouse Nerinx Hall as they took down their other two biggest competitors - Ladue and Webster Groves - head-to-head on Friday. Webster was without Gabi Kohring, of course, but FHN has yet to put it all together just yet.
